Lin-Manuel Miranda is a person who is often compared to a modern day Shakespeare. He takes history and fine art and relates them in ways that are understandable to modern society through songs. He is the playwright of the two Tony award winning musicals In The Heights and Hamilton. His success is due to the family, time period, and area he was raised in. Miranda has not only spent countless hours on his works, but he has also been very lucky because of his surroundings. Lin-Manuel Miranda was raised in a neighborhood in Manhattan by his two Puerto Rican patents, Luz and Luiz Miranda. Growing up, Lin was raised in a musically inclined family and had endless musical resources. He and his sister were “...encouraged by their parents who loved the music of Broadway”(Biography.com Editors). As a child, he was also interested in rap and hip hop music. That love lead to Miranda writing his first Tony award winning Musical, In The Heights. Being a teenager in the 90’s, he was very heavily influenced by rap and hip hop music. Having a love of both musicals and hip hop, he decided to combine the two. Miranda “...recognized early that hip-hop and show tunes, even with their different sounds and audiences, share an emphasis on storytelling…”(Paulson). Miranda was lucky enough to be born into an era where he had access to the music that would influence him to create his hit musicals. His love for rap allowed him to see the similarity between the lives of Alexander Hamilton and, “...the humble beginnings of rappers”(Murray), which inspired him to write Hamilton. If Miranda had not been born in the correct era for him to be introduced to rap music as well as musical theatre, he would have never created hit
