Limiting Online Speech

I thought that schools should limit online speech because people create hater pages in and outside of school, less gossip about teachers and students would decrease, and fewer verbal aggression conversations. In document C (Source: K.K v.Berkeley County Schools, United States Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit, July 27, 2011. This would be a primary source .) A girl created a hater page, soon school administrators found out about the hater page and had a meeting with the girls parents. After the meeting, “School administrators concluded that K.K (the girl) had created a hate website, ...“ This girl who had made a hate website got caught by school administrators. The inference that I made when I was reading document c was that the girl who had …show more content…
Murphy and Michael W. Macleod-Bell, “ ACLU Statement Submitted to a Subcommittee Hearing on Cyber Bullying, “Protecting Youth in an Online World,” American Civil Liberties Union Washington Legislative Office, July 15, 2010 This would happen to be a secondary source). “Previously, young people harassed and [scared or threatened] each other 3rd party, through the mail… etc.” A lot of people are ganging up on other people, and bullying them in a lot of ways. Schools should limit the online speech because cyber bullying has gotten worse over the years than bullying in person. There are different forms of bullying, and that a lot of kids are bullied today.
Lastly in document g (Source: Russlyn Ali, U.S Department of Education Office for Civil Rights, October 26, 2010. This would happen to be a primary source). “ In recent years, many state departments of education and local school districts have taken steps to reduce bullying in schools.” State departments are trying to walk through steps to end bullying. The inference i can make about this document is that Bullying might decrease if the State Department get more people into campaigns to stop bullying. In this document I learned a lot of people want to end bullying so we could a get along.
In conclusion i thought “Schools Should Limit Online Speech” because there would be less gossip, verbal aggression, and people wouldn’t be able to create more hater

Should schools be allowed to limit students online speech? I think schools should be allowed because some student may try and take the internet to their advantage. So, what i mean by that is that student will post things on their social media and think nobody can do anything about it. Students will post things on social media about another person behind their back and before they know it they are getting bullied or being laughed at. Students or teachers can be victims of cyberbullying.…

Similarly to the traditional bullying, cyberbullying consists of an intimidator or bully and a victim. In many situations, people generally take the victim’s side, because they appear weak and powerless. I believe that cyberbullying should be better regulated and not be protected under the First Amendment. Unlike other offensive acts like flag burning that illustrates disrespect, cyberbullying inflicts psychological and emotional harm that may potentially lead victims into committing negative acts. I believe that the First Amendment should be revised to adjust to today’s social situation, especially in terms of technology.…

The article from the New York Times titled “After fatal stabbing, city will create bullying-prevention plan for schools” by Elizabeth Harris. The main idea states that school chancellor and the Department of Education will put new ways to avert bullying after some incidents with students occurred at the Wildlife Conservation school at the Bronx. The author’s thesis is that New York City makes an online portal where anyone can report bullying or anything that threatens the safety of a student. Elizabeth gives no indication as to why she feels this way regarding bullying taking place in schools.…

The assistant secretary states in a letter (Document G) that “some student misconduct that falls under a school’s anti-bullying policy also may trigger responsibilities under one or more of the federal antidiscrimination laws.” This information acts as support because it exhibits how student misconduct can not only violate a school’s bullying policy but at the same time, a federal law. To conclude, schools should very much be granted the right to limit student…

As we become more knowledgeable on the subject of bullying, we can notice how the effects it has on both the victim and the bully can be dangerous. In his article, “Bullying”, John Greenya suggests that the connection between bullying and school violence has become a growing problem that schools aren't doing enough to prevent. He does this by first explaining that “today, bullying is widely regarded as a serious problem in the United States”, then by stating “bullying not only begets depression and suicide but also serious crime, researchers say, not to mention poor academic performance, truancy and higher dropout rates” (Greenya). Greenya finally describes how “in the past, bullying has simply been dismissed as ‘Kids will be kids,’ but the findings from this study suggest that…

On the side of pro-free speech, students and professors are afraid that policies will limit how they talk and the subjects they can talk about in the classroom. By restricting topics like racism and sexism through social policies, colleges may keep students from actually learning and understanding what makes them so despised. Unfortunately, this total freedom of speech may expose students and professors to bigotry and persecution. On the other hand, for many residents, they see speech codes such as trigger warnings and safe zones as essential ways to create a peaceful environment. Enforcing restrictions on certain language or subjects that might be offensive, colleges hope to keep their campuses free from discrimination that might make students and faculty feel unsafe and insecure, impeding their concentration on their studies and education.…

Should free speech be Restricted for Teachers and Students? Teachers and students have a right to freedom of speech. All people have a say in things on what they believe is wrong. Freedom of speech gives people that right to express any opinions without restraint whether it’s about school uniforms, trigger warnings, and posting stuff online about your school. Free speech should not be restricted for teachers and students because one the First Amendment which gives people the right to speak their minds and two people should be honest with themselves.…

In Thomas Bellitteri’s “Preventing Bullying”, he speaks about a college student who commited suicide by jumping off a bridge because he had been bullied. This is not the only example Bellitteri gives about the outcome of bullying but it is one who strikes the audience. The student was in college, therefore proving that bullying happens everywhere including universities and in the workplace. Billetteri also talks about the laws for against bullying, specifically whether or not new laws are needed or not. The article speaks on the laws that are in action but also states “Others worry that some state laws are vague or unconstitutional” (Billetteri).…

Many people, whether parents, teachers, or even law enforcement officers, do not know what their specific state laws are in regards to social media bullying. In a formal survey of approximately 1,000 officers, “over 85 percent . . . said that social media bullying was a serious concern that warrants the response of law enforcement. 90 percent of the school’s resource officers had dealt with a social media bullying case ‘sometimes’ or ‘often.’” Despite this obvious concern, “25 percent of the school resource officers and over 40 percent of the traditional law enforcement officers did not know if their state had a law specific to social media bullying”. These statistics are alarming considering…

Bullying is a matter that no one should take lightly especially in areas it occurs the most like in schools. While many of these institutions have applied policies against bullying, there are still many instances documented where a student has suffered mental, emotional, or physical abuse by the hands of another student. Many of the children that partake in this particular behavior have no idea what kind of consequences their actions will have or either do not care. It is the education system’s job to teach and show students that bullying can be detrimental to someone’s life and that they will have no tolerance towards the issue. Schools should take a stricter approach to occurrences involving bullying and have the punishments clearly outlined…
