According to the author McInnis-Dirtich (2014), reminiscence therapy “is geared to guiding an older adult to reminisce about events that reinforce the belief that he or she is worthwhile, a valued human being”. From time to time, many people, especially older people, have a hard time letting go of their younger selves. Things were much easier for most people when they were young; their bodies were healthy, strong, and not decomposed to the point where they couldn’t get out of bed and were on a lot of medications. What adults don’t get sometimes is that old age is a goal on everybody's paper, whether they like it or not. Aging has its own process, different levels, and time; someone can be 59 but feel like they're 93 or be at the age of 49 but feel like a 21-year-old. Aging is a process we all go through, but in different ways.…

Erikson’s last stage, Ego Integrity vs. Despair describe how senior citizens explore the life from retirement perspective. During this stage, we look back our lives and analyze how it was spent. Erikson understood that if we feel remorseful, unproductive, unsuccessful and unaccomplished for the lives we spent, we could become depress, despair and unsatisfied, that could lead to hopelessness and emptiness when looking through the past. Satisfaction in this stage will lead to the path of wisdom which enable us to look back our past with a sense of cessation and completeness and also embrace death without hesitation (McLeod, 2013). Erikson’s stages were presented to guide the people to avoid failure in life.…

Looking back over your simulated adult life, what sorts of experiences could have contributed to successful aging, and which could have put you at risk for poor transition through the final stages of life? Some experiences that contributed to my successful aging is how I managed stress. I also have a tendency to not rehash the past and focus on living and learning. For this report I interviewed my great grandmother, Margaret Westphal, about the changes she is encountering within each domain throughout late adulthood. Last April she celebrated her 76th birthday and appears to be aging successfully according to John Rowe and Robert Kahn (Boyd & Bee, 2012, p. 462). Rowe and Kahn define successful aging as maintaining physical health, cognitive abilities, being involved in social and productive activities, and being satisfied with life. This interview confirmed my belief that people may have unresolved emotions about the process of aging. At times, this interview was difficult as he described his disappointment with how he treated his body but he encouraged me to learn a lesson from him. He has taught me many life lessons and this interview helped us talk about his life and help us become even closer than we were before.…

The memories that Victoria has shown prove to be of importance in her mental development as she ages; especially living with dementia. Taking this into consideration, I asked myself whether the use of one’s own memories could be used in the medical setting to help those living with dementia and depression. I soon discovered through research that Reminiscence therapy exists. Reminiscence therapy is defined as the use of one’s life histories, which can be either written or spoken, in an attempt to improve their psychological well-being. This class of therapy has been considered as a therapeutic method to aid those who are struggling with Dementia.…
