One of the few amendments that our government has determined to be necessary is the 22nd amendment. The 22nd amendment limits the number of terms that a president may serve. This amendment is based on the precedent that George Washington set when he served as our first president, he only served two terms. Every president after him had only served two terms, until Franklin D. Roosevelt, he served three terms and was elected to a fourth term but died one year into office. This amendment was passed to help protect our country from being under the same leadership for too long and to help get new ideas into office. This amendment is very important to our government because it helps stop our country from going entirely in one direction for a long time and allows for a greater change in our policies. I believe that the 22nd amendment is important to our democracy and it protects all citizens.

They claim that not letting them vote for the person that they want for president does not represent a true democracy. But on the website Debatepedia that author states that “The Presidency is different from almost any other kind of office in the US. Senators and Congressmen don’t have term limits because their voices are balanced by the opposition in their respective chambers; the President has no comparable counterbalance.” Since the president is at the top of the government there is no way to truly balance his power, other than to have a limit on a number of terms they can serve, by doing this it protects us from one person holding the power for too
