Lily Monologue

Beep, beep!

I am awoken by the too common sound of the heart rate monitor.
Lily seems to have been awake for awhile, she says “Good Morning,’’ in her usual cheerful voice and the nurse joins us for Lily’s morning check everything seems to be fine or so I think. Tomorrow’s her first day of chemotherapy, I’m worried, I don’t know why I am worried, everyone says it will help her and everything will be fine in the outcome, but I am not sure.
Lily and I do almost everything together, and we have become even closer since she was diagnosed with grade 3 bone cancer.
She was diagnosed 2 months ago and she has not got any better.
I think Lily is worried but not showing it, I will just make the most of the night ahead and help her forget about chemo tomorrow.

I get on the bus and look around noticing people trying to avoid eye contact with me, I ignore it and look out the window.
I notice my reflection and understand why, they were trying not to stare, my appearance does not look good at all.
I have been a mess and I can’t imagine what Lily’s parent are feeling like.
I arrive at the hospital and head down the hall to find Lily’s parents. They are already in the meeting but I walk in and sit down and listen to what the doctor is saying,
“Lily is in a state that i’m not sure if she is going to be able to wake up, it is up to you if you want to wait we will keep her on life support or we could switch it off the choice is yours, I will leave you to talk about it and I will be back shortly.”
The doctor leaves, I look at Lily’s parents and they are in tears just like I am.
They look at me after talking for a while.
“Jessica would you mind switching Lily’s life support off?”
I say yes straight away knowing there is nothing I can say or do to change their
