1. It is not surprising that T. Ray was once a different man who truly loved Deborah. The reason for this is because he never wanted to talk about her or answer any questions directed towards her existence. This may have been a touchy subject for T. Ray due to the fact that his own daughter took away the woman who he was married to. It is believable that T. Ray was once loving because he did end up raising Lily even if he did a horrible job at doing so. In addition to this being a delicate topic, it is also believable because once T. Lily and Zach’s relationship is complicated at best. Lily is a white female and Zach is a black male, this combination was not acceptable in the 1960’s and even today some people are prejudice against relationships between different races. This relationship is that of a typical teenage crush however, they seem to really be connected even more than expected at this age. Zach understands how difficult it is to become something that you want to be since society is not accepting of someone different becoming an important figure (a lawyer). Zach wants to become a lawyer and Lily supports that. In return Zach supports Lily’s dreams of pursuing her passion of becoming a writer. Zach even encourages this dream by giving Lily a notebook. After harvesting the honey, “[...] Zach showed up with the prettiest notebook---green with rosebuds on the cover.[...] ‘This is for you,’ he said. ‘So you can get a head start on your writing,’” (Kidd 135). The two continue on to hug each other and talk about how if a boy like Zach was ever caught with a girl like Lily there would be severe punishments. This just shows how strong their connection is, even though the chance of getting caught is in the air the duo still remains close. In addition to this, their attraction is so strong that even Zach believes that someday they will reunite when it is socially acceptable to be in a relationship with someone of another race. He is so confident about this that he even tells Lily, “‘We can’t be together now, Lily, but one day, after I’ve gone away and become somebody, I’m gonna find you, and we’ll be together then’” (Kidd 231). By telling Lily that they will eventually be together the maturity of the relationship grows. However, this challenge of not being together makes Lily like Zach even more. The constant adrenaline rush of being together and thinking that someone will find them makes Lily feel even more attracted. In the novel Lily even contemplates this thought about how she shouldn't
