Lily and Zach’s relationship is complicated at best. Lily is a white female and Zach is a black male, this combination was not acceptable in the 1960’s and even today some people are prejudice against relationships between different races. This relationship is that of a typical teenage crush however, they seem to really be connected even more than expected at this age. Zach understands how difficult it is to become something that you want to be since society is not accepting of someone different becoming an important figure (a lawyer). Zach wants to become a lawyer and Lily supports that. In return Zach supports Lily’s dreams of pursuing her passion of becoming a writer. Zach even encourages this dream by giving Lily a notebook. After harvesting the honey, “[...] Zach showed up with the prettiest notebook---green with rosebuds on the cover.[...] ‘This is for you,’ he said. ‘So you can get a head start on your writing,’” (Kidd 135).
