old, John, at 10 yrs. old, then Lillian. “What’s wrong?” asked Lillian. “Where’s the dinner?” “Come sit here,” her Mom said, patting the seat next to her with her hand. Lillian went over by her Mom and sat down, trying to read from everyone’s faces what had just happened. “Okay, now tell me what’s wrong,” Lillian said, not wanting to wait any longer. There was a moment of hesitation. “There’s no easy way to say this,” said her Dad, looking at the ground, “but… I got fired from my job.” There was a pause of silence. “Okay. We’re in a time where it’s not that easy to get a job; it’s the Great Depression,” said her Dad, trying to hold back the tears. “I’m not going to be able to get another job. I’m not going to make enough money to care for all of you.” “All the banks lost all their money so all the money we saved is gone, Lillian,” Lillian’s Mom said with tears running down her face as all Lillian's other siblings continued sobbing. “So,” her Mom said with hesitation looking at her Dad, “because we want the best for all of you…..we are going to have to send one of you to an orphanage.” This is a joke
