The mashup is essentially the vocal track from “John” overlaid over the instrumental track of “My Tears Are Becoming A Sea.” The two songs work surprisingly well together, because the instrumental of M83’s song fits “John” perfectly. It amplifies the theme of Lil Wayne’s song, making it potentially better than the original. I found myself enjoying the mashup more than either of the two songs individually, which makes the mashup a success in my mind.

Similarly, a listener would not need to have listened to both of these songs on their own previously, because the theme of the song is the same.
