Lil Peep Research Paper

Gustav Ahr, more commonly known by his rap moniker Lil Peep, wasn’t the first person I thought of to write about as a leader. He was a skinny 21 year old with most of his face covered in tattoos and serious drug abuse issues-- an eccentric figure that you wouldn’t initially think of to show “leadership” qualities. His image was abrasive but he lived his life as he wanted, brushing off any sort of criticism that was solely based off of his look and music, determined to succeed on his own accord. He was openly bisexual and spoke out on social issues such as homophobia and abuse through his platform. Lil Peep, negated for what he looked like, is a leader in his own sense by championing and creating a new wave of music while being nothing less than himself. A catchy 808 trap beat combined with a nostalgia inducing sample from an old emo band I listened to in middle school and Peep’s sad voice crooning about a lost lover captivated my young teenage heart. Scouring through YouTube, I found a few small interviews where Peep talked on how he was most comfortable when he , his music was the most important thing to him; he was driven to put his music out there as long as he was proud of it. During this interview he was 19 and had “Crybaby” tattooed above his right eyebrow, but here he was, gushing on his passion for music, how his work ethic was contributing to his rising success, his love for his growing fan base. Music was Gustav’s outlet to manage his anxiety and depression; the themes of his songs on heartbreak, addiction, and suicide were all personal issues to him. The topics of his life weren’t new, but he managed to pioneer a new wave of self-produced music that resulted from his drive to create and be nothing less than himself, showing all the people that supported him as much love as he
