Lowry uses a shading technique in Welgatim’s song. For example, by looking at the artwork one can tell that there is shading along the blue rocks, which also includes the color of color technique with oranges and yellow colors displayed over the blue rocks. In this painting one can see what looks to be a human-like body shaped coyote standing on a lake. Beside this coyote looks to be an all-green woman standing on rocks. The rocks this woman is standing on seems oddly separated by a river and a lake. In the background one can see that there are a lot of trees and a volcano that looks ready to erupt. Although, the actual story behind it that Welgatim, the wife of a mythical coyote named Weh-pom falls in love with a deer named Suh-Mim. Due to this, Weh-pom plans to kill his wife Welgatim. Welgatim warns him of the terrible consequences, but Weh-pom believes he should not back away from his plan. Later, he wakes up to a vacant house then realizes all the light and heat has been destroyed. Welgatim had used songs then a prayer in order to summon all of the clouds and rain to the earth. This was considered her way of punishment. The story is overall quite fascinating and strange at the same time. The story of the painting Marine Phoenix on the other hand is about a love story of Lowry’s parents in San Francisco. Somewhat like Welgatim’s song, this painting includes a male and female on top of a lake. Unfortunately, in this painting there is a Native American man and a ghost-like female in a dress.
