The film Like Water for Chocolate establishes a connection with the sociopolitical context of where it came to be through a couple of aspects. Food and gender are established throughout this film supporting a sense of national unity. Laura Esquivel uses food to signify and provide a better understanding of the nature of the characters and as a way of communication. This relationship is also recognized through gender, as this story portrays the strong connection between gender and tradition.
