Like Water For Chocolate Feminist Analysis

C.D Anderson once said, “Feminism isn't about making women stronger. Woman are already strong. It's about changing the way the world perceives that strength”. In Like Water for Chocolate, the author expands the audience's perspective on feminism. The characters in the novel represent the different versions of femininity. An understanding of feminism would be, “Feminism is the belief that all women should be allowed the same opportunities, power, and rights as men. They should all be treated the same and shouldn't face discrimination or disadvantage based on their gender”(Feminism Presentation). Applying the definition to the book, in my opinion the book is to be generalized as a feminist novel. As a demonstration, the two characters Mama Elena and Gertrudis represents my beliefs, as they are displayed as independent, outspoken, and rebellious. The character Gertrudis …show more content…
Similarily, Mama Elena, Gertrudis’s mother, also demonstrates feminism. Throughout her whole life Mama Elena had been rebellious, she had an affair with another man during her marriage and had his child. However, when the father of the child is shot, Mama Elena is left in the marriage with her husband and a broken heart. After a long period of time Mama Elena grows accostumed to her husband. Although, she is once again heart broken when he finds out the truth about the affair and dies by heartattack. Mama Elena had to defend herself and her family with no help from a man. For instance, “All by myself, I’ve done all right with my ranch and my daugthers, Men aren’t that important in this life”(80). Mama Elena expressed her thoughts about men, and their helpfulness in her life. Due to the fact, that she had to fend for her life, her childrens’, her home, and wildlife on the ranch. Mama Elena had developed into a mature, strong, independent fighter. Its quite obvious how much of her traits was given to her daughter,
