7. In reference to the play the symbols have their own significance and meaning. To me, these symbols have been used to reflect on the hard and poor conditions on a refugee boat. I think that the dark colours were used to set a tone of mystery and depth. I feel that the colour blue has been used as a symbol of trust and faith, while red has been used as a symbol of war and danger. I feel this is the case because different types of obstacles occur throughout the play and these qualities are shown by one or more of the characters in order to keep on going.

There is no real obstacle in which Rashida has to overcome, however she takes the role to look after the children on the boat. She does this by giving them special and magical sardines and looking out for them on the journey to Australia. Omar: Like Rashida, Omar is not a main character, however he is still faced with an obstacle to get over. His obstacle is that he stole Jamal’s soccer ball but it soon after fall into the water on the dockside. Omar reached top get it, but fell into the water. In result to falling into the water, Omar was too separated from his parents. Mohammed and Fatima: Like Omar, Mohammed and Fatima (Jamal’s and Bibi’s parents) are not main characters from the script that has been provided. The obstacle they have to come over is boarding the boat. This is because Fatima does not want to board, but Mohammed reassures her that they HAVE to. Smuggler 1 and Smuggler 2: The Smuggler’s biggest struggle in the play is not having anything to eat. That is why they steal the bread Jamal
