Like King Atticus

In this essay, I will be talking about Harper Lee’s famous character Atticus Finch along with the civil rights movement leader Martin Luther King Jr. The two of them had a few things in common I'm going to be addressing two of them. If you hang in for just a little bit, I'm going to tell you how the two were alike. Like King, Atticus is a stern man he believes that everyone is the same in one way or another. To prove that claim in the book Atticus said. "At the end of the day, everyone in the courthouse is the same." While King said, "We must live together as brothers, or perish together as fools." Atticus worries about his kids he is very caring. King had a dream for his kids proving that he cared for them and worried about their future.

His honesty with his children means they trust him and look up to him for guidance. He tells Jack his younger brother that when a child asks you something, “...answer him, for goodness sake.” When Scout asks Atticus if they are poor, the usual response from a parent of a lawyer profession would be to say no, so as not to feel lower than the Cunningham. But Atticus believes honesty is the best policy, so he says, “we are indeed.” Atticus considers lying horribly dishonest, so he attempts to be truthful at all times with his children.…

One of the most specific similarities between To Kill a Mockingbird and the author are the names of her characters. Many of the names found in the book stem from the maiden name of her mother, Frances Cunningham Finch Lee (Flanchman). The main character’s family name of Finch is easy to spot, but several other characters claim their title from this, including Scout’s rotten cousin Francis and the Cunningham family. Lee followed a similar rule with Scout and Jem’s father, Atticus. Not only is his name very similar to her own father’s first name of Amasa, but his character corresponds with him as well.…

In the courtroom justice knows no racial difference, gender, nor emotion, justice is based on facts and evidence. In Harper Lee’s book To Kill A Mockingbird Atticus Finch makes this argument showing us his belief in the Justice system and the trust he places on the jury. Atticus perseveres through his problems and acts upon his role in society, to do what is right. He explains to Scout that “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win…” (76) Atticus is a remarkable man because he defends Tom Robinson in the case even though he knows that in society at the time, when it’s a black man’s word against a white man’s, the white man always wins. He represents a light in a time of darkness because even when most people neglect to defend what is morally correct, he fights for the Negro citizens and tolerates the insults and shame he continually faces. When Scout talks about a book that Atticus read to her, she tells him about a misunderstood character who “was real nice” and didn’t do anything wrong even if people thought he did and Atticus tell her that “Most people are…when you finally see them.” (281) Atticus refers to Boo Radley because while he knew about Boo and respected him staying in the house all the time, most people assumed the worst and let their ignorance interfere with the truth.…
