Certain roller coasters hold records for being the tallest or for being the fastest. One of those record-breaking roller coasters is the Kingda Ka. The Kingda Ka is the tallest steel roller coaster and the second fastest steel roller coaster in the United States available for the public. “This upside down U-shaped track bolts up 45 stories in the sky—that’s 456 feet high!” (Six Flags).…

A lightning bolt struck over Oklahoma, which traveled about three-quarters of the length of the United States, on June 20th, 2007. The lightning bolt struck from Tulsa, near the Arkansas border, to near the Oklahoma Panhandle, which is 199.5 miles or 321 kilometres. This is important since lightning can start tens or hundreds of miles away and then come back to where you are, so people have to be careful of where lightning is coming to grounds even if the storm past. The World Meteorological Organization confirmed that the longest duration of a single flash of lightning was 7.74 seconds, which occurred over Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, France, on August 30th, 2012.…

“Catatumbo Lightning” I chose Catatumbo lightning because it’s a very beautiful thing to see, yet scary at the same time. Catatumbo lightning is not different from any other type of lightning, and the storms are not different from any other type of storm. It is an amazing feature to see and experience. Methane from bogs is often cited as a cause for the Catatumbo thunderstorms and lightning. Many people fear lightning because it’s electricity coming from the sky.…

When I hiked up Bishop Peak in San Luis Obispo, I enjoyed it so much I wrote it up for California Explorer (May/June 2014). Since then I’ve wondered about the other ancient volcanic plugs that make up the nine sisters, a group that starts with Morro Rock and ends at Islay Hill in the southeast corner of San Luis Obispo. I decided to trek down to the area with the idea of exploring the other morros, or at least the ones open to exploration. Morro Rock is environmentally sensitive and closed to climbing. Chumash Peak has no access, and Cerro Romauldo is used only by the National Guard.…

The instability of the roller coaster creates a spring constant. This means that as the car travels through the roller coaster, it loses energy because the track shakes and moves. For example, when viewing the videos it became apparent that when the car entered the loop, the track shook violently making it difficult to determine when the car reached each location.…

The different products used to make explosives is astronomical. I am not even sure that there is a way to regulate them without costing the taxes payers an enormous amount of money, manpower and a ton of bureaucratic red tape. The government needs to spend more time educating the general public through free training, consequently the public can assist in observation of their surroundings to help prevent these attacks from happening. I never even thought about the tin foil you used as an example, which alone goes to show we cannot regulate everything out there that may be used in conventional explosives.…

Helium is a colorless tasteless, non-combustible, non-explosive gas that is seven times lighter than air. Helium does not have anti-inflammatory or bronchodialating properties. Combining helium and oxygen gas (Heliox) results in a gas with a similar viscosity to air but with a substantially lower density. Heliox acts by lowering the resistance to gas flow within the airways and permitting an increase in ventilation. Heliox converts turbulent flow into more efficient laminar flow.…

Symbolism is such a powerful element in literature because interpretations of symbols vary depending on culture and personal experience. Recently, the Confederate flag caused issues because some saw the flag as their sign of heritage while others viewed it as a racist symbol. The same kind of debates can happen within literature, unless otherwise stated by the author. The way one interprets a symbol can drastically affect the story. Although context clues may guide a reader towards a certain conclusion, questions like “Is that really what he means?” can linger in the back of readers’ heads.…

Roller coasters have always intrigued me. It amazes me that people eagerly exchange the safety of the ground for the well sought out moment to be tossed through the air like debris in a hurricane, flying around in the sky. Someone at some point in history thought that people would enjoy such crazy experiences, and that person engineered what some of the first of these terrifying machines. Propulsion is a force that pushes forward or drives and object forward. This concept can be seen in action with the use of a balloon powered car; this car demonstrates a type of propulsion system in which it produces thrust and potential energy and uses the kinetic energy that it will gain from the movement to push the car forward. The thrust is obtained from the balloon which applies Newton’s third of motion that states, “for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” Specifically, the balloon car’s action of the air escaping from the straw causes the reaction being the movement of the car. In my car, the design was formulated to best execute those actions with the fairly light materials allowing the car to have the maximum potential…
