Lighting The Fuse
To celebrate Canada’s Day this summer, my mom, dad, sister, brother in-law, and I decided to go to my sister’s old friend Erin’s house. Erin was having a bonfire and fireworks display, so she invited everyone she invited a lot of people over. Most years my family gets together for a party at our house but this year we decided to go somewhere else.
We left the house for the twenty minute drive to Erin’s place out in the country. As I was watching a movie on my laptop, I noticed a dark skyline over the horizon but thought nothing of it. Once our car pulled up the first thing I noticed was how big the yard was. There were carefully timed hedges and trees covering the front yard. Upon approaching the house we were greeted by

After putting on our bright pink leotards and ballet shoes, which trust me we're not the most fashionable, we went out to the car to wait on Dianna’s mom. I should mention it was still raining as if the earth would flood outside, this made it slightly hard to hear but we ran out to the car anyway. Me, Dianna, and Dalton bolted through the door, sprinting to the car that Dianna had unlocked with the small remote. The cold rain made the humid, hot day not feel as bad as the rest of that summer had been, which was dry and hot. When we got into the car we sat for a bit but then Dianna decided she wanted to turn on the music so she jumps to the front seat of the car.…

IT is the early winter of 2015, a cold, windy Wednesday afternoon. Two of us sit together, side by side, in soft, comfortable chairs on the second level of our home. We wear everyday clothes. I listen patiently to her ramblings. When the talking is over, I sit up in the chair, and I am officially telling her everything, the eldest child of Heather Crawford in the city of Hutto, Texas.…

“My sweet little blue-eyed girl,” he said in a half-sung sigh that had nothing to do with her brown eyes but was taken up just the same by the vast sunlit reaches of the land behind him and on all sides of him—so much land that Connie had never seen before and did not recognize except to know that she was going to it.” (Carol Oats, Pg 10) All of the land that she saw was unbelievable, it reached all the way out one her line of sight, all Connie could see were clouds, beautiful trees, animals running throughout, birds happily humming their song and perfectly cut grass that was pulchritudinous flowers. Connie looked around in disbelief, with wide eyes. Her eyes lit up, it was the most wonderful place she has ever seen. She looked at Arnold, but he was not there.…

Atwood, Indiana I would not call this my favorite place, but since I do not actually have a favorite place, this is my only option. My great-grandma died on October third of 2012 (I remember death dates, and yes, I know that it is weird), but that day was oddly one of my favorites. Her name was Norma Jean Irwin, and she was so small and frail, yet stronger than a horse pulling a carriage. She grew up in Indiana, where the house is currently standing, and lived as a farm wife, which of course contributed to her strength.…

The early morning sun peeks over the Seattle mountains and through the tall evergreens, the light reaching for every material within its grasp, illuminating the once dim street. On this bright May morning, the light stretches toward the window belonging to Gwen Kennicott. Within the next few seconds the light has cast a shadow through her blinds and onto the grey walls. On an ordinary day, the light trickling through her window wouldn’t have stirred her, but this was no ordinary day.…

Throughout my life, I have been the victim of several burglaries. At the age of seven, someone, in broad daylight, broke into our house and shot my dad in the chin. I was displaced to my aunt's house for weeks and missed most of my 1st grade year. When I was seventeen, I walked in on my home being robbed by some local kids. They were upstairs when I came into the house and escaped through a window, but the idea that I could have come home earlier still haunts me.…

Sitting alongside an outcrop of Skyline drive at two in the morning, one becomes rather introspective. The sky is an inky, black canvas lit by vivid stars and streaked by blazing meteors. Cold air greedily leeches heat from any warm surfaces, yet my plaid blanket fights off an icy attack as I gaze in awe of what lies above me: a view I have taken for granted and rarely admired. It was a magnificent and peaceful experience. I was on a family trip to observe a once in a lifetime meteor shower; the six Rowlettes were all together, a rarity these days as my siblings have grown older and moved farther away from home.…

The cottage like house staring Laney Marshall in the face was depressed and calling out for a match to rid it of its misery. Apparently the universe thought the ugly brown color of the siding wasn't enough and bestowed the house with acute scoliosis. The grass grabbed at her and her mother's ankles while they dragged their two suitcases containing their entire lives to the front door. Something about the dark green slab of wood separating them and the inside of their new home gave the appearance of a frown. Laney wasn't sure where in the bad paint job, brass handle, and lock she saw it, but she knew she saw it.…

All the pictures, articles, and news reports could not have prepared my soul from the heartache of what it was about to witness. Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath left nothing but devastation in her path, leaving ghost towns for neighborhoods, homes dilapidated, and with resilient locals determined to overcome. As I slowly drove down the first hauntingly, quiet, empty street, I could not help but feel my shiny car was grossly out of place. As I turned the key abruptly to quiet the engine I used to think so gently purred, I closed my eyes and pictured how this once bustling, busy neighborhood used to look and sound.…

Reconciliation Interrupted by the faint sounds of birds chirping and grass swaying in the gentle breeze, the calming silence became a distant memory. As the birds flapped their wings, moving at the edge of the tiny meadow, from one tree to the next, they cast their shadows over the body of a small brown skinned, black haired girl. She lay on her back in the hilltop grass, facing directly up towards the almost blinding light of the afternoon sun. Her dark skin, holding a lively warm glow, reflected the rays of sunlight off of her quickly flickering eyelids. Suddenly, they were open, revealing her dark brown almond shaped eyes and her ever so slightly off white sclera.…
