The Lighthouse of Alexandria was located on a small island called Pharos near the city of Alexandria (History.com Staff). The Lighthouse of Alexandria was designed by a Greek architect named Sostratos and it was completed around 270 B.C. during the reign of Ptolemy II after the death of Alexander the Great (Fowler). The purpose of the light house was to guide Nile River ships in and out of the busy harbor (History.com Staff). Many believe that the Lighthouse was anywhere between 200 to 600 feet tall, however, most modern scholars believe the Lighthouse to be approximately 380 feet tall. Archeologists have found ancient coins in which the Lighthouse was depicted. The Lighthouse appears to have been a structure with three tiers. The first
