A new addition to the world of infant toys is the ‘Light ‘n Go Activity Garden Treehouse’ by Little Tikes. It contains a series of different toys that all have serve a different purpose to help the baby develop. In fact, there are over 80 different activities which include a slide, peek-a-boo windows, zig-zag ball drop, a shape sorting tree, and different lights and sounds (The Little Tikes Company, 2016). Offering three different ways for infants to play through Discovering, Pretending, and Moving. This toy is designed for infants ages 6months to 36months. In the discover mode babies can begin exploring everything surrounding them, and start to see the different colours, shapes, lights, sounds, and textures that are featured on this toy. …show more content…
Jean Piaget created a theory of cognitive development, with stages relating to the age of a child for those ages. For children up to two years Piaget said they were in the Sensorimotor stage of development, where infants acquire knowledge through motor actions that are guided by sensory organs, and their environment (Cole, Lightfoot, Cole 178). When the child is provided with this toy they are able to explore the surroundings it provides with it’s many opportunities to learn. During this stage infants are acting upon the world that surrounds them, which helps them to grow as they influence each other. The environment they are in influences what they are doing, and how they are perceiving it (Cole, Lightfoot, Cole 178). The Sensorimotor stage includes six sub stages as well, which helps better explain what is happening with the child at each month of age. During Tertiary Circular Reactions which are at 12 - 18 months the infant is exploring new objects, and exploring what they can be used for, problem solving skills are also starting to form (Vettor, 2016). The activity garden offers an area where infants can match shapes with spots they belong in, help them match colours, and animals. It allows them areas to practice their new problem solving skills, and strengthen them. There is also the Beginning of Symbolic Representation at 18-24 months where infants can use representation to internalize or picture the world mentally and think about an object that they see, as well as representations which can be used to guide future conduct for the importance of problem solving, and symbolic play (Vettor, 2016). There is a magic lantern which changes colours, and has lights that are designed to get a child moving, and dancing around.
