Soldiers undergo traumatic events while in combat. Some survive harrowing experiences; other men die. When soldiers go back home to their loved ones, it is hard to look past what happened to their comrades while they were in combat. For the soldiers who survives, everyday life is a tossup between feeling genuinely happy and feeling guilty for surviving. Even the toughest of soldiers may suffer from survivor’s guilt---a psychological syndrome that makes someone believe they have done wrong by surviving a situation when others did not.…
We as humans experience trauma during some time in our life, such as the loss of a loved one, war, rape, and segregation. These traumas can leave a long lasting effect on a person. It can isolate a person from others leaving them in silence and also with a shadow of themselves that is unrecognizable. With trauma, a wall of silence can build around a person and begin to chip away parts of them, by sharing their stories the wall can be broken and the person can begin to heal.…
Limb deficiencies resulting from traumatic amputation are a specialized form of trauma. They often do not occur in children, and as such, can be difficult to handle. This trauma is also specifically labor intensive because it affects the child as whole: physically, emotionally, and psychologically. These consequences are persistent, occurring as soon as the trauma does, and continuing long after into the lives of the child and parents. These also mean that the child will require care in different aspects of life, such as occupational therapy, prosthetics, and psychological therapy.…
The principles of trauma-informed care (TIC) can be universally applied to other practice models, such as the family preservation model. Using a strengths-based perspective is a valuable TIC principle that would be very effective in family preservation. By highlighting a family’s strengths you can use these attributes to address challenges. Noticing strengths can also help build engagement and rapport with clients to help aid in the intervention process. Being person-centered is another TIC principle that could guide family preservation practice (D. Strohm, PowerPoint, September 10th, 2015).…
Every time a football player laces up his cleats, straps on his helmet, and steps on that field, he could be making one of the biggest mistakes of his life. Brain damage caused by multiple blows to the head has never received the appropriate attention that it deserves. A recent study by researchers at the Department of Veterans Affairs’ brain repository in Bedford, Massachusetts showed that of the brain tissue from 128 former football players examined, 101 (78.9%) of them tested positive for CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) (Goff). CTE is a degenerative brain disease the results from head trauma, and contains symptoms such as: memory loss, confusion, aggression, depression, suicidal thoughts, parkinsonism, and progressive…

The Trauma-Control Model highlights that trauma event(s) can lead to low self-esteem fantasies that have the potential to becoming violent fantasies. Traumas that occur in childhood seem to have the greatest effect on people because ones first few years of life are especially formative. A child may take a traumatic event and internalize feelings of guilt, shame, and inadequacy (Hickey, 2016). Hickey makes clear the correlation between traumatic life events and dissociation. Often times, people dissociate themselves from a traumatic event as a means to cope with the pain associated with that event and attempt to maintain control (Hickey, 2016).…
After experiencing a traumatic event each individual will differ in the intensity of the cognitive and emotional responses to the trauma. Some events that could trigger acute or post-traumatic stress disorders could include disasters such as natural disasters, car accidents or being an emergency responder during a traumatic event. Victimization could include torture, rape, domestic violence, child abuse or terrorism. Combat or hostage situations can also lead to acute or PTSD. You could also not be experiencing any symptoms until something reminds you of memories or emotions you might not expect.…
There are many different mental disorders that affect people throughout the world. One of the leading causes for the development of mental illnesses is trauma. Trauma plays a significant role in the development of borderline personality disorder. McLean and Gallop (2003) express that the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder was quite higher in patients that suffered from trauma in their childhood, than the patients that experienced trauma in their adult life. This portrays that trauma can cause a harmful effect on an individual’s mental health.…
If I had the ability to choose which type of memories to give up in the case of brain trauma or injury, I would choose to give up my memories of the past if I were a relatively young age at the time of the brain trauma. Losing my long-term memory would mean that I would lose all my memories up through the accident. I would lose all the good memories from my childhood, my marriage, my children’s birth, and other wonderful events that happened. At the same time, I would also lose any bad memories of things that occurred in the past. Upon losing my long-term memory, I would no longer have my memories of the past, yet I would still be able to form new memories while living my life.…
Introduction The history of Canada is one that not many like to talk about. Between taking land, killings, residential schools, and high foster care rates there is a lot of intergenerational trauma that needs healing still. For this essay I picked Scenario number two, a story about an eight-year-old boy named Jackson. Jackson lives in Victoria, a city on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.…
Title Psychodynamic psychologists believe that everything that we do or say today is directly, and infallibly, linked to the events that we have encountered in our past. In the journey from the cradle to the grave our minds process and internalize the environments we encounter; these experiences often imprint themselves in our conscience, thereby changing our behavior and attitude towards the outside world. When peering into what makes someone the way they are as an adult, his or her childhood is likely considered to a great extent. If a child is brought up with exceeding encouragement and endorsement, they will most likely have good prospects. However, if someone is abused in adolescence they will exhibit adverse traits in maturity.…
Although trauma and aging a topic that is not discussed often, it is something that should be taken into consideration and understood. Trauma and the effect it has on older adults is something I have not heard discussed until this class. Before the discussion, I had never considered the effects that trauma has on older adults. Initially, I thought that trauma would be something that the older adults experienced in the care of something and the effects it has on it. However, now it is clear that trauma, in regards to, older adults is on a broader spectrum.…
