My addiction is food. I was raised not to feel and to eat in regards to any situation. As a result, it has taken me the majority of my life to change from living to eat to eating to live and to change my relationship with food into a healthy one. As a result, there are a variety of healthy lifestyle behaviors and choices that I practice in regards to nutrition. I always start my day with breakfast, eat every two to three hours, and stop eating two hours before bedtime. I am able to avoid fast food and go out to eat once a week by making a weekly meal plan and preparing meals ahead of time. When grocery shopping, I always bring grocery list, a full stomach, and focus on the perimeter of the store where the less processed food is located. I take my weight; divide it by two, and that is number of ounces of water I drink daily. Plus, I don’t smoke, drink soda, or drink alcohol. As a result, to attract new and maintain the current nursing staff, employers need to work on educating the nursing staff on health promotion and improving lifestyle choices to improve satisfaction in nurses. The quality of care patients receives and nursing turnover has a direct correlation with the stress that nurses are experiencing and how this stress is dealt with. Most nurses have poor self-care practices and deal with stress by self-medicating with food, alcohol, or smoking (Markwell, Polivka, Morris, Ryan, & Taylor, 2016). As a result, the top three preventable health risks that health care workers face are obesity, smoking, and physical inactivity. Obesity has been related to working night shift, long work hours, job strain, and job insecurity. Secondly, physical inactivity when off work is found in healthcare workers that have low participation in decision making at work and frequent involuntary overtime.
