In literature and in life, halcyon moments are integral to our development as individuals. In the story “Lifeguard” Chris’ halcyon moment is when he is, “high diving, [Chris] like[s] everything about it, the swing of [his] back [when] [Chris] climb[s] the ladder, the metal steps and rungs cold under [his] feet and hands. [Chris] even like[s] the way [his] stomach falls away when [he] get[s] to the top and [can] feel the pebbly grain of the platform under [his] feet” (Scott p.22 line 20-23). The reason for this being his halcyon is because when Chris goes diving before the pool opens, he gets a kick out of it. He loves the way the kids stare at him with open mouths through the glass of the viewing area.…
I work for a little known Seaworld park, Sesame Place. Yes, a theme park dedicated to the treasured childhood show Sesame Street. While childish, the park is operated by guidelines and policies instituted across all other parks. I happen to work in Aquatic Operations, or simply put I am a Lifeguard. I am one of nearly 200 lifeguards who are on the sesonal payroll in the park.…
Well it’s the the Fourth of July, and its my first day as a official New York City lifeguard. A bunch of determination and training brought me to this day. It all started when my Dad said I couldn’t pass the NYC lifeguard swim test. I said I was happy with the job I have and liked the group of people I worked with, I loved the camaraderie. But after looking up the requirements and salary, I made up my mind that I’m going to prove my dad wrong.…
I exposed myself to new ideas and obstacles when I became an ocean lifeguard. Surprisingly, the hardest part about being a lifeguard is communicating with people from different cultures and backgrounds. For example, one beach has a large population of Spanish speaking immigrants. To communicate with them was a hefty setback for someone like myself who does not come from a Spanish speaking background. To adapt, I asked as many Spanish speakers as possible, how to say certain phrases until I was able to communicate with basic sentences to get my point across.…
Growing up in Hawaii, you're faced with multiple fun opportunities. For my self born in Kamuela of the Big island, being in the center of the island opened up many doors to many different activities. I grew up on a long narrow road that had many bumps and pot holes up and down the entire road. At the top of the road there was a small grade hill that I would bomb with a skateboard. My house was about three quarters the way down the road.…

27 cousins, 13 aunts and uncles, 2 grandparents, 4 states, 4 cabins, 10 days, and 1 lake. This is a typical Haschke vacation to Lake Pimushe in Bemidji, MN. 42 people on one vacation sounds hectic, but it’s the best ten days of the year. We all look forward to that time every other summer. We come from cities in Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois, and Colorado, just to be with our family and strengthen our bonds together.…
An achievement that sets me apart from others would be my National Lifeguard Service (NLS) certification, which I attained in the spring of 2015. This credential acknowledges that I have the skills to prevent people from drowning in pools, beaches and lakes, across the nation. It also deems me capable of supervising and overseeing multiple activities, competitions and swimming programs. Some may consider lifeguarding as just another job, but for me, it’s a lifestyle. My competitive swimming background, beginning when I was five years old, has exposed me to multiple situations where lifeguards had to act quickly, efficiently to make accurate decisions based on their knowledge and judgment.…

As a little girl, I spent a majority of my summers on the beach with my best friend, her mom, and my mom. It is my happy place, out on a towel with my toes in the sand and a book in my hands. I like to play in the sand and in the water, but not near as much as I like to lay out with something to read. My mother was the librarian at the elementary school that I went to, Mixon Elementary School, so I had a wide variety of books to choose from. She and Ms. Selina would take me and Jean Kendall to the school to pick out a book to read before we left for the beach and we were ready to go.…
