I could work as much or as little as I wanted. For instance, some lifeguards worked no more than four hours in a week, while others, such as myself, worked thirty or forty. If for any reason I could not work a certain shift I was assigned, then I could just ask one of the other lifeguards to cover for me. Also, if I could work a certain day that I was not scheduled for and I wanted more hours, it was never hard to find someone willing to give up their shift. The net result was that I could both work whenever I wanted, and not work whenever I didn't.
The third and most important reason Lifeguarding at Burnham Park was the best job was the welcoming and supportive work environment. First of all, the patrons at the pool were well behaved and usually followed the rules. Also, my boss was always very kind and generous. In fact, he once bought donuts for all the lifeguards on duty. In addition, some of my fellow lifeguards became my closest friends. A few of us used to get together every Friday. I was never bothered by any of my coworkers.
