I could work as much or as little as I wanted. For instance, some lifeguards worked no more than four hours in a week, while others, such as myself, worked thirty or forty. If for any reason I could not work a certain shift that was assigned to me, I could just ask another lifeguard to cover for me. Also, whenever I wanted more hours, there was always someone who was willing to give up his or her shift. Having such freedom in my working schedule allowed me to enjoy the job much more than I otherwise would have.

The third and most important reason Lifeguarding at Burnham Park was the best job was the welcoming and supportive work environment. First of all, the patrons at the pool were well behaved and followed the rules. Also, my boss was always very generous. In fact, he once bought donuts for all the lifeguards on duty. In addition, some of my fellow lifeguards became my closest friends. In fact, a few of us used to get together every Friday night. I was never bothered by any of my coworkers. On the contrary, the camaraderie of the lifeguards was the main reason that I kept the job after so many

This past summer, I underwent many swim tests and was finally offered a lifeguarding position at a local town beach and waterpark. I eagerly accepted the offer and was excited to start. A coworker noticed that a man had went underwater and quickly blew a whistle to inform everyone at our facility that there was an emergency.…

Instead of working with daylight like farmers did, working class men usually worked before the sun came up and long after the sun went down. Twelve to fifteen hours was the average workday for these men. In the 1830s, a textile mill worker reported working “from 3:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M.,” (Coffin 583). On top of long hours, mines, factories, and textile mills were hazardous; there was little to no training for employees, and many accidents occurred due to this. They often were overpacked with workers, and the only light in the building was when the sun shone through the windows.…
