Lifeguard Narrative

The day seemed to drag on and on, as I waited, counting down the days to California. It was a humid, sunny afternoon down at the Alton pool, where I usually spend most of my summer days working as a lifeguard. Today was very different than most…. And maybe the reason why was because it was my last day of work before I flew off to the big L.A. Most days at the pool the time went by slower than any I have ever known, with the scorching hot sun burning my skin, and little kids yelling at their friends telling each other secrets or what they want to play next. As soon as the clock struck 8:00 PM I quickly waved my arms at the lifeguard on duty to signal it was time to blow the last whistle for the day, telling all the kids to get out of the pool. …show more content…
As the driver got out and greeted us, we continued to climb through this enormous limo with all this glitz and glamour, but that all quickly ended as soon as we got to the car rental place. We unloaded all of the luggage out into what I thought, would be an even better ride, as my parents talked about renting a Mercedes. My dreams were quickly shattered as they grabbed the keys only to show us this huge fifteen passenger red van. You can imagine my reaction seeing this huge blob of red that would catch everyone’s eye. Although it was very unattractive, my sisters decided to make the most of it by name it, “Clifford.” As we rode along through the streets of LA our road trip had just begun. With only endless hours of traffic, humid air, barley being able to sleep, we started to get very grumpy. With that being said I feel very sorry for my dad, and boyfriend who had to endure numerous threats that I had cast out on my little brother, Aaron who would not leave me alone. A car full of girls would be very hard to manage when they are constantly bickering, but with that being said at least we could all agree on a place to eat, In n’ Out. This fast food place is widely known for their delicious food only served in certain places, and California was one of them. As soon as all of us, scarfed down our delicious animal style burgers we piled in the van for another couple hours/days to go visiting family along California in the different places that they lived. FINALLY, the day had come where it was time to go to the one place I have been waiting for, Universal Studios. I could only imagine the endless rides I would go on, and things I would see like the Transformers Bumblebee which was my idol. It really was magical, as soon as I stepped foot on the ground, I felt like all of my dreams would come true. We had spent all day there going shopping, getting souvenirs,

I’ve always been one to break lab safety rules, but you might consider standing on your tiptoes in crocs while feeding invertebrates appropriate behavior for a ten year old. But that’s how I spent my school breaks, in my dad’s lab, doing a bit of scientific exploration of my own as he worked. Dad and I always arrived at promptly 8 o’clock every morning, somewhat asleep from the cold created by the marine layer. When we entered my dad’s office, I took full advantage of the rolling chairs, spinning around as Dad checked his email. As he went off to work, I went off to play, reading first my books from home, then delving into the boxes of insects and other small animals in the adjacent storage lab as a Dr. Demento CD played on the lab boombox.…

In eighth grade I had decided I wanted to swim competitively and run track within the same day. I would run with the track team after school, then go directly to swim practice, with the only rest in between the two was the thirty minute car ride over. As well as the only thing for me to eat was a builder's bar, or whatever my father had in his car. Competing in two sports a day wore me out and took a tool on my body. I was offered to swim with a lower class that was at a later time in the day, by my coach.…
