Lifeboat Poem

Decent Essays
"Lifeboat" is a song from Heathers performed by Elle McLemore (H. McNamara).

I float in a boat
In a raging black ocean
Low in the water
With no where to go
The tiniest lifeboat
With people I know

Cold, clammy, and crowded
The people smell desperate
We'll sink any minute
So someone must go
The tiniest lifeboat
With the people I know

Everyone's pushing
Everyone's fighting
Storms are approaching
There's nowhere to hide
If I say the wrong thing
Or I wear the wrong outfit
They'll throw me right over the side

I'm hugging my knees
And the captain is pointing
Well who made her captain?
Still, the weakest must go
The tiniest lifeboat
Full of people I know
The tiniest lifeboat
Full of people I

This requires women to subject themselves to the mercy of their families to decide their fate, much in the way that fate was determined for the passengers of Titanic based on the socioeconomic class of their families. The lifeboats were filled with first class passengers (women and children) the lower second and third class women and children were left to their own accord. Laila spoke of Jack( the main hero of the Titanic movie) “Everybody wants Jack to rescue them from disaster,” They realized that “There is no Jack, Jack is dead” (304). Jack represents a savior come to rescue Mariam, her children, and Laila from the constant battery of Rasheed. However, this savior is devoid of existence, causing Miriam to take matters into her own hands and securing her own fate.…

After reading the text and truly understanding Tom Dudley and Edwin Stephen's situation, I am one who says they did what they must to survive. At that time, society thought of those men as monsters not realizing that they were doing what they had to do get on that lifeboat. As the story reads, that the boat was drifting on the ocean, and was probably more than 1000 miles from land; that on the eighteenth day, when they had been seven days without food and five without water, D. proposed to S. that lots should be cast who should be put to death to save the rest, and that they afterwards thought it would be better to kill the boy that their lives should be saved; that on the twentieth day D., with the assent of S., killed the boy, and both D.…

Comparison Research Paper We all experience different situations and circumstances throughout our daily lives. Often in literature the reader learns inadvertently about the author’s viewpoint, and beliefs. For example, A Yellow Raft in Blue Water by Michael Dorris, and The Education of Little Tree, by Forrest Carter, readers form a viewpoint about the author’s beliefs. On the other hand Ignatia Broker author of Night Flying Woman is an open book about the story of her Great Great Grandmother. The novels A Yellow Raft in Blue Water, Night Flying Woman, and The Education of Little Tree, are all Native American literature.…

Roland Barthes states that “Photography seems to me closer to the Theater, it is by way of a singular intermediary (and perhaps I am the only one who sees it): by way of Death” (page 31). In Kenneth Graves photograph, “Hotel Pool, Miami Beach, Florida” taken in 1980, you see the bottom half of a man and women. The man is pressed against the back of the women, pinning her against the wall of a pool. He is grabbing her vagina and pulling her body closer. This sexual scene is set between the curtains of a glass window meant for hotel guests to watch the on goings of the pool.…

the fish. After a few attempts, he decodes the meaning with a flashback of a memory. Doty says the poem about the mackerel “was written some six months after my partner of a dozen years had died of AIDS, and of course everything I wrote--everything I saw--was informed by that loss, by the overpowering emotional force of it.” The sad memory of his passing partner influenced his poem and that experience he had then became the encounter he displayed in the poem. Berger suggests that the encounter is an experience that the artist and art had.…

The speaker of “Little Black Submarines” is a man that is drowning in the proverbial sea of depression. He is losing people in his life because he is letting his dark thoughts control him. This is evident in line 3 when he says, “Told my girl I'd be back, operator please” (Line 3). In this line he is talking about how he told his loved one that he would get better and is asking God for help. At the final verse of the song the speaker finally makes a plan on his own to get out.…

We were pulling into the boat dock after a long day of fishing, but someone was already there so we had to pull into the other side and wait. My dad went to go back the car down, and my mom, brother, and I were in charge of moving the boat to the other side. My mom told us to push it away from the dock and start to guide it over to the right side. The next thing I knew the line went slack and we all began to look at each other because we knew what had just happened, the clip on the rope broke and the boat was now floating backwards into the middle of the lake.…

War Photographer by Carol Ann Duffy is about a photographer who is struggling with the consequences and reality of war. The voice of criticism from the experience of war combined with the use of poetic devices exposes the theme of war. The poet uses compelling and distressing illustrations in this poem to enthrall pathos into the reader’s feelings. The use of pathos stirs up emotions of sympathy, sorrow, and despair. Thus, his photographic films are filled with pictures of the genuine agony caused by the bloodshed of warfare.…
