The Life taken away by Death What could possibly haunt the taker of lives, Death? Death is haunted by humans because of the stories of their lives which he takes away. A life that haunts him is that of Liesel Meminger. Death follows Liesel for a long time and follows the life of Liesel. Death saw Liesel lose her family, first her brother, then the Hubermanns, eventually Death and Liesel meet personally. Death takes away from Liesel until her death and the people he takes from her haunt him. The first account between Liesel and Death involves Liesel’s brother, Werner, aboard the train. While Liesel’s brother is asleep death comes to take away his soul. Liesel was the only person to see Werner die besides Death himself. “I entered the train. My feet stepped through the cluttered aisle and my palm was over his mouth in an instant. No one noticed. The train galloped on. Except the girl” (Zusak 20). Liesel was indeed the only one of her family to see her brother die, death and her notice each other here for the first time. The next time death and Liesel will meet, Death takes away far more than one person from her.

Sadly the lives of many on Himmel street would be taken away by Death, but one person survives. Liesel, the survivor, was in the basement writing her book when the bombing occurred. Liesel goes out to see the destruction of Himmel Street and sees the death of the people she loves. First, she weeps when seeing Mama and Papa Hubermann dead. Then she finds the boy who was her best friend, Rudy, and she begins to break down in tears. “ “Rudy,please, wake up”” (Zusak 535), sadly Death takes away the Hubermanns, who she came to love very much, and Rudy, who she wishes to have back so they could fulfill their promises to each other. This meeting with Death has taken almost all from Liesel, but will not be the last time they
