Life sentencing can take the life of a person away but it shouldn't take the life of a young teen. While teens can commit heinous crimes, they still need the time and help to justify their reasoning for their actions. There can be said many explanations as to why juveniles are dangerous and menace to society.Like saying they are out of control, raging hormones controlling their bodies. In Gail Garinger article “Juveniles Don't Deserve Life Sentencing” it is stated , “ 79 young adolescents have been sentenced to die in prison… they were denied access to education and rehabilitation programs and left without help.” America is so straight forward on locking these young kids to life without giving them time for change. The decision to end a life must be absolutely and without question warranted. If society acknowledges and takes mercy on mentally impaired offenders, the same courtesy should be extended to adolescents who experience the same type of diminished capacity. In order for a juvenile to be sentenced to death, they must first be tried as an adult, but they are not an adult. Adolescents don’t have the same brain maturity, emotional maturity or life experience as adults do. The juveniles who commit the crimes that could land them on death row are missing something in their lives.…

I agree with the Supreme Court that a death penalty awarded to someone under the age of 18 is inhumane and cruel, but I strongly believe life in prison for such a crime at age 17 is warranted. My argument is made out of a balance of retribution and the future safety of society. Rehabilitation, if it is still possible, should be a focus for the offender himself. That’s why I think judicial waivers are best in these types of situations. States can use discretionary or mandatory transfers to adult court.…

I believe that those who committed a crime as a teen should be able to have parole. While I can understand the argument that teens who have murdered have stripped others of their life and should therefore be stripped of their own freedom and life, I lean more towards the science behind it all. Teens have highly underdeveloped brains. Their frontal lobes -in charge of decision making - are still growing. Thus, when faced with stressful situations and hormones rushing through the body, they may make atrocious decisions.…

Harsh minimum sentencing practices around drug offences exist because of the Reagan administration’s rhetoric that blamed drugs as the primary cause of violent crime in the US during the 1980s. Prior to Reagan’s “War on Drugs” era, drug crime in the US was relatively minor, however, beginning in 1980, the number of prisoners in jail for drug related offences skyrocketed. While there were just 41,100 of these prisoners in 1980, by 2010 that number had tripled, an increase of 1,100%. One of the biggest reasons for this seemingly outrageous increase is mandatory minimums, a system devised to enact harsher sentences for first time offenders, with the goal of making them reluctant to commit the same crime again. In her book, The New Jim Crow, professor…

One of the reasons juveniles should not receive life sentences without parole is because juvenile brains are not fully developed until adulthood. According to Paul Thompson a USC neurologist researcher, “In terms of cognitive development, as research on the human brain [of juveniles] is far from adulthood” (Thompson). Adults need to understand that juveniles are still juveniles. When juveniles are charged with a heinous crime, like murder, they need to not overlook the fact that a juveniles brain is undeveloped.…

I believe that by making some changes to the mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines would in the long run make our justice system better able to serve the people. I know many of you, like I believe there should be no change to the mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines, but have you or I for that matter really thought through what that means for people like Lee Wollard or Trina Garnett? Lee Wollard didn’t hurt the young man, he protected his daughter and family, yet is spending twenty years behind bars because he fired a warning shot into his home. Trina Garnett was an abused teenager with a mental illness that needed medical care not sent to prison.…

If a juvenile committed a crime do you think they should spent their childhood and adulthood in prison for life? The Supreme court ruled that juveniles who commit crimes should not be sentenced to life in prison because it violates the 8th amendment. However some judges strongly disagree that juveniles who commit heinous crimes should always be punished with a sentence of life in prison. From my point of view juveniles who commit crimes should be accountable for their crimes but they shouldn’t get life in prison. Firstly, I disagree because most juveniles are at a young age and their brain is not fully developed.…

Adam Liptak’s article, Locked Away Forever? The Supreme Court Is Considering Whether Life Imprisonment For Teens Offenders Constitutes ‘Cruel and Unusual’ Punishment, asserts that in most cases, “juveniles cross the line, and they have to be treated as adults and punished as adults” (Liptak 14). Age does not determine maturity, nor does it determine responsibility. There is no telling whether someone means it or not when they do something they are not supposed to do. When a child commits murder or rape, people say it is no big deal because they are just kids and were not thinking straight.…

There have been many opinions on juveniles being convicted as adults on the crimes they have committed. When it comes to some of these harsh crimes, who could not punish the individual to the fullest? It does not matter how old a person is because everyone knows the difference between right and wrong. If someone is raised differently and believes it is okay to murder another human, than they cannot just change their mindset. An individual that makes and adult decision should have the same consequences.…

The decision of juveniles being tried as adults in the world of criminal justice has usually been an object of controversy. Some agree that an adolescent who commits a serious crime like murder deserves to be penalized exactly like an adult; while others declare that a minor should not face the same punishment as an adult.
