Keesh thinks of a way to kill the polar bears instead of just stabbing it from behind because he knows by doing that he is risking his life. Keesh’s plan is was to take “‘a small chunk of blubber’” (Martel) then put whalebones in it and then cover it up with more blubber so the whalebone is unseen. He places the balls of blubber outside so it can harden and when it is frozen, the bear is going to pick it up and eat it. As the bear digest the ball of blubber, the blubber will melt and the whalebone will hurt the bear internally. Lastly, when the bear drops her guard, Keesh will kill her with a spear from the back. When he finds the cans of water, he needs a way to open the can in order to drink the water. Since he was on a boat, there was no can opener, therefore, Pi needs another way to get to the water. In addition, Pi was really thirsty so he did not have much time to think of a way. Pi “kneeled on the bench and leaned over [while] holding the can with both [his] hands, [he] sharply brought it up against a hook.”(Martel). By dinting the can, he managed to open the can of water and drank every drop of water. Pi then opened three more cans of water and also drank all the water. Pi was able to open the can of water even without any resources. He thought of a plan and acted on it immediately shows that he used his knowledge and brainpower in order to cure his thirst.
