Major Theme: Fight for Survival. The major theme in this novel was the fight for survival. A human will do almost everything for survival. Many times Pi wanted to just give up and stop working so hard to survive. But a human's natural instinct is to survive, so it was expected for Pi to continue struggling to survive. The first example can be found in chapter 27 when the setting is described as “As the boat suddenly started to sink everything suddenly became a chaos.” This was a form of transition into the next scene where Pi and the bengal tiger were alone. The author also makes it clear to the reader where Pi exactly is. On page 111 it says “We left Manila and entered the Pacific.” This allows the reader to get a better understanding of where Pi’s adventure starts. Lastly, another thing the author did was wrote a lot of inspirational quotes for Pi to narrate. For example, “The lower you are, the higher your mind will want to soar.” Yann Martel added a lot of quotes, which shows a lot about his style. The first and one of the most important symbol is the ship, Tsimtsum. The ship ended up sinking leaving Pi stranded on a lifeboat. The ship symbolizes abandonment or independence. Pi was forcefully separated from the comfort of ship, and was left in the middle of the ocean to provide for himself. Another symbol in this novel is the overall concept of animals. Animals in this novel symbolize the different behaviors of people for example the hyena and the flying fish. The animals in the text sort of mimicked the behaviour of people, allowing the reader to compare a character's actions with one of an animal's. The third symbol I found was Richard Parker. Asides from being a really important character in Pi’s story, he was also a huge motivation for Pi. The tiger symbolizes the will to continue living. It pushed Pi and distracted him from thinking of weak thoughts such as his parents death or the possibilities in his future, which also makes the tiger symbolize Pi’s strengths. The fourth symbol I found was the ocean. The ocean guided Pi in this lonely adventure. It symbolized guidance and assistance because it provided Pi with food and it kept him floating. The last symbol I found was the color orange. This color was constantly mentioned in the text. Manty things in the novel were orange, this including Richard Parker’s fur.
