Pi’s past enabled him to survive in a lifeboat with a tiger on the Pacific Ocean for 227 days in Yann Martel’s Life of Pi. One’s past can easily influence ability, personality and perspective. Based on Pi’s past, swimming skill, religion and perspective to animal profoundly give him inspiration to find the hope for survival.
Swimming skill is the most essential factor to support Pi’s survival on the lifeboat in Yann Martel’s Life of Pi. Pi is a good swimmer, so this basic skill he learnt in his childhood enables him to live on the sea. As the writer asked Pi’s past, Pi introduced himself: “Swimming instruction which in time because swimming parties was grueling, but there was the deep pleasant of doing a stroke with increasing ease and speed over and over (Martel 3).” This shows that Pi practiced his swimming skill for many times in order to be a skillful swimmer. He protected himself from the tiger by swimming away to keep a distance apart.
