More than tens of thousands of religions and sects exist today. Is it possible that all are acceptable and correct? Can we be part of more than one religion? This is precisely the challenge that Pi is facing. Pi realizes something that not many people recognize, we were created with the need to worship. Six-thousand years of human history provides this undeniable truth. The holy book ties this spiritual need to our happiness for Matthew 5:3 says: “Happy are those conscious of their spiritual need”. Pi is searching to love something greater than himself– God. I believe Pi feels that something is missing in his life and tries to fill this void, whether it is love or peace or happiness. Pi’s inclination towards spiritual activities is truly noteworthy despite the lack of spirituality his family displays. Pi has good motives but yet lacks guidance. These three religions require faith in the unknown. Hebrews 11:1 states the following as the definition of faith, “Faith is the assured expectation of what is hoped for, the evident demonstration of realities that are not seen.” Undoubtedly, as a young person, faith is an extremely difficult quality to acquire. Of course, no two religions are exactly the same, all have different sermons, ceremonies and rituals associated with them. Pi’s main concern and purpose is to love God by following all three religions. “I just want to love God.” (pg.76) Although there are some similarities between religions the differences outnumber them.
