Life Of Pi Religion Essay

Ang Lee’s beautiful film, Life of Pi, brings into question the way we see ourselves and the world we live in by touching beliefs in our life such as religion, as well as the strength within us. The film takes you on a journey through Piscine (Pi) Molitor Patels life and the life changing events that partakes within the story. As a young boy, Pi was raised in Pondicherry, India in a zoo/botanical garden owned by his father and mother. After the country is put in a state of emergency, Pi and his family are left with no choice but to sell their zoo animals and sail to Canada, where they will start a new life. Tragedy soon strikes the boat the Patel family sailed, and sinks, leaving Pi as the only survivor on a life boat with a Bengal Tiger. Throughout his life, we see him grow as his life and mind molds around the religions he finds interesting to him. Pi is raised as a Hindu, but finds Christianity while in the mountain side and Islam in the Muslim quarters of Pondicherry. He is ridiculed for blindly accepting so many faiths, but he simply wants to devote his love to God in every way possible. When stranded in the ocean, Pi nearly loses hope on surviving after losing his family and becoming emotionally unstable. He believed he was alone when he wasn’t, he knew he had to make changes to his ways. Pi became more self-sufficient and knew that being a vegetarian in the ocean would hinder him, so he learned to fish. Praying everyday brought him closer to God, gave him comfort, and a purpose to live. Knowing there was a reason to why God had chosen him to survive the shipwreck gave him the strength to continue fighting for the will to live. As a child, the world was full wonders and enchantments, but after his tragedy he is pushed into adulthood so that he may fend for himself alone in the
