He thanked Vishnu for introducing him to Christ. Later, he witnessed a group of
Muslims performing the Salah ritual. Pi also adapted this and said that he found serenity and a sense of brotherhood in these praying rituals. At dinner one evening with his family, Pi’s father tells him that he cannot believe in three religions. He says that believing in everything is the same as believing in nothing. His father also says that he needs to pick a path and to start thinking rationally so he is not thinking blankly. His mother more so supported his idea of having three religions and says he is still young. He then tells his parents that he wants to be baptized. This was a critical point in Pi’s life because he is stating that this is not just a phase, but what he truly believes in and will not stand down. I believe that he also does not conform to what his father is telling him because Pi knows that he has had a personal experience with each of the religions and cannot explain to this father who rationally believes that faith works under specific laws. He at first was on a small life boat with a hurt zebra, an orangutan, a hyena, and unknowingly the tiger, Richard Parker. The hyena kills the zebra and the orangutan, then Richard Parker comes out to kill the hyena, leaving Pi and the tiger alone surviving together for an unmeasurable amount of time. It seems that Pi’s faith was tested quite a bit during the time. Each time, he felt as though his gods, whether it be Christ or Vishnu, abandoned him and Richard Parker. At one point in the movie, Pi states that one cannot know the strength of faith until it has been tested and doubted. Although Pi was always pushed and almost to a breaking point where he felt like he was going to die, his faith was always restored in some kind of act. Whether it was the flying fish to give them ample amount of food, or the floating island and signs that the island the island would kill him if he stayed.
