Because of his knowledge with animals, he knew what he had to do to ensure his safety on the boat with Richard Parker. To claim his territory, Pi would go to the neutral zone of the lifeboat, rock it to make Richard Parker a little sea sick, and blow his whistle to show aggression so he could aggravate and irritate Richard Parker somewhat, but not too much to the point where he would be attacked. Once Richard Parker would show signs of coming to Pi’s side of the boat, Pi would continue to do what he was doing before, without backing down. This way, Richard Parker would associate the blow of the whistle with sea sickness. After doing this multiple times, it allowed Pi to have more control over Richard. If he felt threatened by him, all he would need to do would be blow the whistle, and that would scare him enough, instead of needing to rock the boat and everything, every single time. Also, because Pi knew how effective repetition was when learning, it helped him become skilled on the boat very quickly. For example, he knew the only way for him to become a skilled fisher would be for him to do it as much as possible. At the beginning, he struggled with fishing, but by the end, he was much more experienced and it was a lot easier for …show more content…
He knows that animals in the wild live a completely different life than ones in captivity. If captivity is all the animal knew, that is what he would want to stick with. To the animals at the zoo, their cages are their homes. It is all they know. Pi knows that if you were to put any of these animals out in the wild, it would take them a long time to adapt and it would be very hard for them because they don’t know what it’s like to be prey. Also, if they have been in the wild for most of their life, and are then taking to an enclosure, it’s not that they won’t survive, but because they aren’t used to it, they want to get out of the enclosure. Pi talks about a black leopard that escaped the Zurich Zoo in 1933. That leopard was not always in captivity, and because of that, she was not used to her enclosure. She would do anything to go back to the way it was for her before getting brought to the zoo. That involved in her escaping and being in the cold for a total of 25 weeks. The only reason she escaped was just because she had not adapted to her new enviroment, which was very important for her to live in her enclosure. animals and people wouldn’t
