The next important passage is when Pi states "" It's the plain truth: without Richard Parker, I wouldn't be alive today to tell you my story."(pg 164). Pi realizes how important Richard Parker motivates him to stay alive on the lifeboat. Without Richard Parker Pi realizes that he would be left all alone, since he was with Richard he was able to use his survival instincts and presented him with a task to work with. The quote is stating how Pi would have given up if it was not for Richard but it shows how he fought for his survival with Richard. Richard Parker made sure that Pi stayed alert, just incase Richard was going to attack Pi.
