Human Tragedy in the Life of Pi Life of Pi was an extraordinary well written book about a young man, whose family owned a zoo. Their boat was caught up into a storm which caused their boat to sink. He was the only survivor from the boat, besides the animals that climbed into the life raft with him. Now he has to find his way home in a raft with dangerous animals. At the end of the book, when Pi is speaking to the investigators, he tells a different story about what happened. He tells a story about people instead of animals. In the Life of Pi, the idea that Pi creates a story that replaces human tragedy with comparisons and interactions between the stories, so that the reader can understand Pi on a deeper level. The comparison in the book are the animals to people for example, Richard Parker is Pi, The orangutan is Pi’s mom, The zebra is the chineses sailor, the hyena is the cook. Pi is partially responsible for the death of a few people and he can’t deal with that as the truth. So he comes up with a more fantastic story to help block out the truth of what happened. The hyena killed the zebra and the orangutan tried to defend the zebra. This lead to the orangutan and zebra’s death. The tiger, Richard Parker, then killed the hyena. In the alternate story this would read as the cook killing the young Chinese sailor and Pi’s mother defending him. Pi then attacks the cook. It relates to human tragedy, because people are being killed by their own selfish ways. The cook is a good example of human tragedy. He was a cruel person that was manipulative and caused most of the deaths. Pi is also a good example of a human tragedy. Pi abandons his religion for a short amount of time, so that he could survive. He didn’t totally abandon it, but he did eat meat and
