The carnivorous island in Life of Pi, is used as an analogy in order to represent human nature, both beautiful and dark, this is evident by the extreme long shot of the island and it synonymous look as though it is a human. For Pi, the island is his Garden of Eden and is able to provide him sustenance, however, this is merely a facade placed to lure prey to the carnivorous island, “But all that the island gave him by day, it took away again by night”. Lee is attempting to illustrate to the audience the confronting quality of nature which only causes more suffering. Similarly, the great storm scene is able to portray this spiritual discovery through the use of medium long shots whilst Pi states, “Why are you scaring him?… I surrender! What more do you want?”, Pi is directly angry at God and this emphasises how Pi is attempting to reconsider what he believes to be true. The use of low camera angles and non-didactic tone further illustrates Gods omnipotence and the ultimate power He possesses. Through the film, Lee is able to portray his understanding regarding spiritual concepts to the audience in a way which enables one to exercise the thought regarding personal and cultural
