The Life of Pi is a very interesting novel filled with many themes and complex ideas. However one of the most interesting and remarkable aspects of the novel is Pi’s development as a person when he’s stranded on the life raft. In The Life of Pi, Pi’s time on the boat is used to represent the struggles that he overcomes and the fact that Pi was able to overcome these dangerous and difficult situations ultimately proves that Pi is not only far more courageous than he was before shipwreck, but that he has also grown as a person. Pi’s character growth and gain in person is seen throughout the novel; Pi’s perseverance to stay alive throughout the whole novel is vital to this idea that he has grown as a person. Another major part of what develops Pi’s character is his gained ability to cope with difficulty and disturbing situations. This is seen throughout almost all of part. This is a very valuable skill and it can be directly linked back to his time at sea. Furthermore Pi ‘s gain in character is seen through his relationship with Richard Parker (The name given to the tiger on the lifeboat), at first he is utterly scared of the tiger however throughout the novel he slowly builds dominance and friendship with the animal, this bond is a representation of Pi’s gained mental strength.

Pi’s will to survive is a key concept in the novel. However this survival instinct and drive is not seen early on in the novel. At the start of the novel Pi is shown to be an innocent boy, however his family supports him greatly.
