The novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel is about a sixteen year old boy Piscine Molitor Patel whose journey on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger Richard Parker is really long and exhausting but the hope keeps him going. In the novel religion and faith play a major role in Piscine’s survival. Religion and faith are necessary for Piscine’s survival because it brings out the courage and gives him more strength to survive. Firstly, Richard Parker is not only an animal but he is also the faith and strength of Piscine. Secondly, Pi continuous to practice his religious faith at sea and his belief in God give him more hope and strength. Lastly, Pi faiths keep him emotionally stable.

Pi finds the strength to cope with the death of his family members. Although he describes the day when he lost them as the “worst day”, he soon finds strength. “I still had the strength to appreciate fully what I felt” (Martel 137). Pi says this when referring to his feelings a few days after the shipwreck. This shows that Pi remained mentally stable even after losing everything and being stranded in the middle of nowhere. This also shows that Pi understood grief and knew how to deal with his emotions. As a matter of fact, Faith allows him to stay mentally stable in the middle of the ocean. “To look out with the idle hope is tantamount to dreaming one’s life away” (Martel 186). This shows that Pi is still wise he hasn’t lost his wisdom. This is because he has learnt to think positively through his belief in religion. To sum it all up, faith and religion gave Pi the emotional and physical strength and allowed him to stay mentally stable throughout his
