Pi tells an imaginative story to the investigators about how he survives 227 days on a life boat with the tiger, rather than the true story. The events and experiences Pi goes through are too horrifying and tragic for any young boy to face and witness. Pi notes, “In both stories the ship sinks, my family dies and I suffer” (Martel 352).” Pi uses animals in place of humans, to not be reminded of the loss of his family and the cruelty that human beings are actually capable of. He draws Kelly on the walls of the cave to feel a sense of her presence. Chuck admits that, “I 'm so sad that I don 't have Kelly. But I 'm so grateful that she was with me on that island. And I know what I have to do now” (Zemeckis 2000). Chuck is well aware of what he has to do to make his survival worth it. Chuck has to fight his pain and do everything he can to see her again.
Although Chuck and Pi are both survivors of trauma they had to face at sea, they both have very different values of time. In order to survive Pi must forget about time, to not be reminded of his tragic circumstances. Pi mentions “I survived because I forgot even the notion of time” (Martel 212). Additionally Pi tries to keep himself occupied. He assigns himself chores to fulfill to keep himself busy through the day. Pi states “I kept my self-busy. That was key to my survival. On a life boat, even on a raft, there is always something that needs doing” (Martel 210).
