Life Of Pi And Story Of Keesh Analysis

Being in extreme environment can be dangerous but using your knowledge is the best solution out of this situation. This is what the characters in LIfe of Pi by Yann Martel and “The Story of Keesh” by Jack London did. In both stories, The Life of Pi and “ The Story of Keesh”, the characters use their intelligence, knowledge and good judgement to survive in extreme environments. In “The Story of Keesh ", Keesh shows many survival skills in his village in the Arctic. For example, to the villagers and hunters “ Killing of a polar bear is dangerous, but thrice dangerous it is, and three times thrice, to kill a mother bear with her cubs” ( London 66). For example “ I had had a can - surely I had a can opener?... Could I prise it open with my fingernails? I tried. I couldn't. My teeth? It wasn't worth trying. I looked over the gunnel. The tarpaulin hooks. … by dining the dint, I managed a trick. A pearl of water appeared” (Martel 87). This piece of evidence shows how Pi uses his knowledge to get what he wanted. He needed water so he used what was around him. “I counted the cartons of Seven ocean. I had eaten one; there was thirty one left. According to the instructions, each 500 gram cartons was supposed to last one survivor three days. That meant I had food rations to last me.. 91 days! … I had water rations to last me 124 days” (Martel 91). Pi is now being careful of how much supplies he has. Pi can’t eat too much because he does have a limited amount of food supplies and water. So Pi is being smart about calculating how many days of food he had and dividing it up. “ I had to tame him” (Martel 92). This evidence demonstrates how Pi knew he had to discipline Richard Parker if they were going to be stranded in the middle of ocean.
