Phillips to arrive. He is five minutes late. I wonder what is taking him so long. All of a sudden Mr. Phillips stormed in the classroom angrily. He goes to his podium and barks out: “If you thought this is an easy class where you will do little work. I would get out now.” Why is Mr. Phillips looking at me when he is saying this? I know it’s me since I am the only person sitting at this side of the room. “This class will be very hard with a lot of work but if you do it I can assure you that you will be well prepared for the AP exam in May. I expect all my students to get A’s sadly I have to accept grades until B- ‘s but if you get lower than a B- at the end of the semester I will drop you faster than a heartbeat.” Now really why is he glaring at me for this part? “This school has a policy of staying in an AP class you need to a B- it is also the same for recommendations. Often, this group tends to be the socially observed “other.” What an other is can change drastically depending on who is defining it, and to whom they’re assigning the term. As we’ve seen in both Book of Salt by Monique Truong, and Exile According to Julia by Gisele Pineau, the characters Bihn and Man Ya represent comparable, but fundamentally different ideas of the other in French society.…
