What Makes A Good Performance Essay

When it comes to thinking of things that I am "good" at, my brain struggles. It ponders, searches, and reaches for any estimation of skill that it might guess that I have. However, there is one thing; performing. Being a performer is one of the only things I have ever been good at. From the youngest age of my life that I can correctly perceive, I remember doing wild activities and pretend shows: strutting myself around like a popinjay, all in the desperate attention to garner attention by putting on a show. Which, in essence, is the very core of what a performer is.

I remember the first "big" performance I had as a high schooler, it was "Bottom's Dream", an abridged version of Shakespeare's "A Mid-Summer Night's Dream", and we were at our Competition. In an ironic twist of fate within the impending days of the performance; I had fallen terribly ill. I, however, was and always will be too stubborn to give into outside forces even

During some performances, I have been nervous because of my physical state at a certain time, or I have felt negative feelings about specific performances because I did not feel like I was able to prepare or warm myself up in the proper way I would like to. Going to JMU is something that I genuinely believe will fulfill my needs as a performer in ways that I could not aptly describe. Not only would studying theatre at JMU allow me to continue my love for performing without inhibition, I strongly feel that being enrolled in JMU's Theatre program will provide me with the education about my craft that will allow me to perform at the best of my ability more often, and provide me with the knowledge and technique to keep myself working properly as a performer for many, many years to

What am I good at is a question to ponder, however, the first think that comes to my mind is a talent that I work towards improving, golf. Every day I work towards improvement and when I think about it I also see it as my passion. In this case I think that both the mind and the heart overlap. While I am good at it because it challenges me it also forces me into uncomfortable positions. Many would think that they wouldn’t want to do something that isn’t easy and a breeze but that is where the passion comes for the game, because it isn’t something that I have a lot of experience in other sports.…

Stage-managing the spring musical, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying by Abe Burrows, was probably the biggest accomplishment and challenge I've had so far. What stage-managing is, it's essentially an assistant director with a lot of other jobs added onto it. Those jobs include calling cues for the show, making rehearsal reports, taking all the notes you could possibly imagine for a show and working with not one but 4 other directors. . There were many challenges that faced me while working on the musical.…

It all changed with my first major mistake. I decided to go onto stage with a sore throat and as the performance began, it was quite obvious that something was wrong. I had managed to get myself on stage, but the actual performing part was beginning to get increasingly difficult. After singing one croaky note, it became apparent to the crowd that it would not end well. I quietly finished my performance and got off the stage as quickly as I could.…

Everyone I have met at Mitty has inspired me to want to attend myself. Since my brother is a Mitty student, I have gotten to witness firsthand how much he enjoys Mitty. When I was a guest to Kristen Voelker, I was delighted to have that viewpoint validated, as it was very obvious she enjoyed her time at Mitty. Throughout that day, I was greeted by many people, freshmen, and seniors alike, and all were friendly. The positivity just broadened my favourable view of Archbishop Mitty High School.…

The heat from the stage lights, the watchful gazes of the audience, and the sweat dripping off of our faces as we struggle to remember our lines, these sensations of being on stage are what caused the performing arts to become not only an activity, but also a passion and an unexpected source of personal growth. Through my experiences in drama and music I have been able to discover my own meaning of fulfillment and define who the person behind my appearance truly is. My passion in the performing arts started when I was a young child first learning to play the violin. Picking up the violin at the age of 6, I became stuck on one of the most basic songs for almost a whole year. At that time no one believed that I could play the violin, my teacher thought that I was too hyperactive and even my mom attempted to convince me to quit.…

What does theatre mean to me? As I review the questions provided for me to include in my goal statement, I feel lucky to express how theatre is unique to me and how I structure my everyday life around the dramatic arts. Anytime I act, I relish in the opportunity to be a leader, to help people, and to accomplish my actions with confidence. I started off with this philosophy at an early age and have not forgotten about it since. In my opinion, acting is not solely about the individual’s performance, but about how an individual actor can use their confidence and passion to impact other actors, enhance a production, and inspire the audience.…
