Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness: Where is the life?
Is it morally right for an innocent child to be killed because a mother is not prepared for a baby at the time? Abortion is becoming a bigger problem day by day in today’s society. Abortion is looked upon as being cruel for murdering innocent unborn children for no reason. After further research I found that conversely, others believe women are guaranteed the right to choose the abortion method is cases of rape, incest, and other health issues. There have been over 50 million reported abortions worldwide since 1973. The U.S government have taken many laws into consideration to help put an end to abortion. Otherwise known as the murder of an unborn baby. This creates controversy due to the moral aspects of the issue. A famous court case, known as Roe vs. Wade was in Norma McCovey’s favor when the jury decided that the government cannot restrict a woman from an abortion. This legalized abortion in all 50 states. Later, pro-life advocates took a stand and an amendment was passed that restricted the government from funding abortions, this was known as the Hyde Amendment. This was the biggest decision that had ever taken place in the United States Supreme Court system. The biggest aspect of this issue is determining whether or not the fetus is in fact a human being yet or not. Pro-choice activists argue that abortion is not murder because the fetus has not devolved human qualities and is “only a mass of tissues”. After 18 days of becoming pregnant, a heartbeat begins to develop as well as different parts of the brain. Throughout weeks 11-12 of a pregnancy, the fetus beings to act sensitive to touch, heat, light, and noise. Further studies have shown that a baby can feel pain at 20 weeks. (“Baby Developmental Facts.” Prolife Across America, prolifeacrossamerica.org/baby-developmental-facts/.) Unborn fetuses deserve to have the same rights as we do, but none of that matters if they are not guaranteed the basic right to live in the first …show more content…
A study of women who had previously received an abortion showed that 44% were having nervous disorders, 36% experienced insomnia, 31% regretted their decision, and the last 11% were already being prescribed a “psychotropic” medicine. (After Abortion, afterabortion.org/2011/abortion-risks-a-list-of-major-psychological-complications-related-to-abortion/.) Other side effects following an abortion include eating disorders, anger, loss of self-confidence, and depression. The American Psychological Association’s (APA) Task Force on Mental Health and Abortion determined that most of the problems women experience after aborting their child are derived from “terminating a pregnancy that is wanted and meaningful, pressured to have an abortion, and lack of social support from others.” (“Abortion and mental health.” Wikipedia, Wikimedia Foundation.) There are many physical health risks too; “Many complications have been associated with induced abortion. "Minor" complications include: minor infections, bleeding, fevers, chronic abdominal pain, gastro-intestinal disturbances, vomiting, and Rh sensitization. The most common "major" complications are excessive bleeding, embolism, ripping of the uterus, anesthesia complications, convulsions, cervical injury, and endotoxin shock.” (Reardon, Aborted Women-Silent No More, Chicago: Loyola University Press,
