That 's roughly 8 empty houses for each of the 1,408 homeless people in the Stanislaus county. Instead of building a new facility to house homeless people, why not utilize the empty buildings we already have? If nobody is using these houses, we shouldn 't let them dust away when there 's people wandering endlessly on the streets. Even if each person was given one home, that still leaves 10,400 empty houses for use. This money can be used to fund this system in the form of loans. The majority of this money should be spent on the houses and they should be distributed similar to how disability checks are to ensure the money was used appropriately. Other priorities should go to the billing for electricity, water, and internet. In Stanislaus, people are less likely to have access to the internet (modbee.com) and by ensuring everyone has it available in their homes, it opens many opportunities and resources to help them out that would otherwise be unavailable. This includes job applications that can be filled out online, which helps them set the foundations for their future. In addition to this, resources otherwise unavailable can be found online, including services that can help people pay their bills and those that offer money and food (needhelppayingbills.com). Any other extra money should be spent on housing essentials such as a refrigerator, beds, or food. To get word out for this program, volunteers such as myself can go to areas of high homeless populations for those interested. We would start off with a few houses at first, with priority going to those with children and ensuring they end up near schools, and build up more houses as people begin to repay the
