I vividly remember the first time I truly appreciated how HyVee helped shape who I am as a person in mid-March last year. I was working a long tedious six-hour shift on a persistently busy Saturday. I recall that day being especially busy, as it was a fuelsaver Saturday. I did not think much of what had happened at the time, but a man came into my aisle buying what seemed to be a little under thirty items. I did what all good checkers do, and I took the time to ask how his day was going and did he find everything he needed. We then began talking about the NCAA basketball tournament and all the good games from last night and similar small talk. I then had to call over a manager as he had liquor. I would be lying if I were to tell anyone that I was not a little anxious. I had been told going to the store director is rarely a good thing and those thoughts were creeping into my head. Despite doing nothing wrong, I headed to his office unknowing and afraid of what would happen next. I knocked on the door, and my store director, Matt, asked me to sit down. He then handed me a printed copy of an email. I did not recognize the sender, but Matt told me that this man had gone out of his way to laud my kindness and patience.
