In the well-known classic of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, Twain teaches us many life lessons. There was one theme that stands out the most; you will grow up to have your own opinions and thoughts compared to what u have been taught by the society.. Huck was always told and shown how people like Jim should be treated. Huck was taught that Jim, a black, has no power over a white man and are like animals and that’s how they should be treated. Huck has always been against the law, he was different. He comes to know Jim and have many adventures with Jim. His father would go on a rampage about how horrible the government is. His father said an African American has more respect than he has and ranted about how the world has gone crazy respecting the niggers. Huck of course heard his father and agreed to an extent because that’s all he had. Huck was also taken care of by a Widow and Miss Watson. They always tried to teach Huck the civilized ways. Miss Watson was strict on Huck always trying to make him do right. Miss Watson had slaves where Huck has known Jim but as a slave. So Huck’s whole life has been telling him African Americans are not equals to white men. Even when Huck first ran into Jim in the woods and was told that Jim had run away Huck had it in his mind he needs to turn Jim in. When Jim and Huck would venture out into the towns he had heard men and women say if any niggers are found they are t o be turned in. Huck would witness men go out with dogs and guns after Jim and other runaway slaves. Huck knows keeping Jim is like treason against his own people. Huck decides to keep Jim he would feel guilty turning him in but guilty not to so he decides whatever is easier. So he keeps Jim. However Jim got his feelings hurt a lot when Huck would mess around with Jim. Playing mean tricks to make Jim feel dumb. Like in the text when Huck Put the rattle snake in Jims sleeping place causing Jim to get hurt. Huck would lie to Jim and say he doesn’t know what happened. It was little pranks like that Huck would pull on Jim he didn’t mean for Jim to get hurt but was meant to scare and freak Jim out. “Found a rattlesnake in there... I killed him. Curled him up on the foot of Jim’s blanket, ever so natural, thinking there’d be some fun when Jim found him there.pg.59” That was just one incident Huck was being mean to his friend. Huck and Jim where going through a Fog and got segregated. Jim was so scared and thought something had happened to Huck. When they finally found each other Jim was almost in tears saying he’s glad Huck was ok because he would have miss his friend and would be so lost without him and so Huck decided to mess with Jim then. Huck told Jim he doesn’t know what he’s talking about and Jim had to have dreamt that all. That hurt Jim’s feelings. Huck had taken it too far.
