A movie versus a book the age-old debate but how much can they differ when telling a story about something as universal terrible like the Holocaust? This is what I intend to find out when comparing the movie Life is Beautiful (directed by Roberto Benigni) to the book Night (Elie Wiesel). The most notable way these two differ is in the way they are presented (book vs movie), their plot and most importantly the reason they both were created in the first place.
The most glaring way these two work differ is the fact that Life is Beautiful is a movie while Night is a book; changing the way they are viewed. Night chooses to focus on death and horrible conditions of the Holocaust in an attempt for people to not forget the tragedy. While Life is Beautiful chooses for its theme to be evident throughout the film wanting to show light can come from darkness. So here we can they are extremely different maybe even polar opposites like Life is Beautiful showing an entertaining movie. With it limiting the number of deaths, is heavily depended on visual gags and spending a lot less time on the Holocaust than something like a documentary. Night focuses on telling the story of Elie and his bitter survival story across multiple camps (Birkenau, Auschwitz, Buna, and Buchenwald) wasting no detail and describing in good detail. All these differences would make you think the only similarities between the two is that both the main characters are Jewish and a father and son go through it. But, ironically enough both Night and Life is Beautiful are similar in the theme though not outright stated. Elie does survive the Holocaust and all of the horrible conditions which could show light can and will come from the darkness of Life is
