‘’Life is a dream for the wise, a game for the fool, a comedy for the rich, a tragedy for the poor’’ quoted by Sholom Aleichem. Sonny Blues is a short story Written by James Baldwin. Sonny Blues is the story of a young jazz musician from Harlem, NY who gets addicted to heroin, is arrested for using and selling drugs, and returns to his childhood neighborhood after being released from prison. Sonny is the main character who has the drug addiction problem. Sonny’s brother is the narrator who tells the story. Isabel is Sonny’s sister-in-law which is Sonny’s brother 's wife. For example, the story takes place in Harlem during the early 1950s. Where the city plays a pretty important role in the narrative. The narrator uses Harlem because it’s part of the reason Sonny his brother turns to drugs to escape the feeling of being trapped by his surroundings. The train station was used to show that was their main use of transportation back then. Another example, is Harlem, New York was known for drug sellers and drug users in 1950. Harlem is one of the first places where drugs became big for selling and using. Heroin was a drug that made people do anything for a hit of heroin. For example the narrator, following his mother’s death, is presented with the watch over his brother Sonny. Since their mother’s death, Sonny’s life has been marred by prison and drug abuse. Also the loss of his daughter made him have a change in life while is brother sonny was in prison. When Sonny was in prison the narrator felt He has failed to live up to his mother’s commandment that he will watch over his brother. Another example, is how the narrator showed the idea of brotherly love after Sonny came home from prison. The narrator has taken Sonny back into his home after ever thing he put his family through. When Sonny came home from prison it was hard for his brother to look over Sonny pass but he made it his point to do so. He also took on the role of watching and worrying over Sonny as he emerges from the darkness of prison and drug abuse. Although, sonny made bad choices in life I felt his narrative can help change other people’s lives around who are hooked on drug selling or drug
