“We have to keep quiet. Do not go play outside, watch out for the police and do not talk to anyone,” my mother would tell us every day. Me and my brothers were wondering why we ran out of Myanmar? But I never gave up. I read newspapers, and listened to radio during my free time outside school to improve my English. Going to school gave me hope and dreams. Back in Myanmar, there was no such thing as hopes and dreams. All my friends are going to be farmers just like their parents. Every day, kids follow their parents to farms and learn farming instead of learning at school because there was no school. When they reach a certain age, they start helping their parents with their farms and settle down when they are old enough. But I was blessed enough to have an opportunity and hope for a better life. As they say, “Life is like a rollercoaster. It has ups and downs. But it is your choice to scream or enjoy the ride.” My family enjoyed ups and downs and never gave up. In 2010, the United Nation called my mother and told us that we are leaving Malaysia and finally going to United States of America after waiting for three years. It was the best day of my life.
